When this vehicle came into our shop it was very interesting to work on.  The customer brought his 2005 Subaru WRX in with only a Magnaflow exhaust on it.  He had purchased a Tanabe Downpipe and wanted us to install it on his vehicle before we tuned it.  We love opportunities like these because it allowed us to do several pulls on the vehicle to see what gains can be achieved from adding different parts.  Below is the stock graph for this vehicle.

This car made 186 horsepower and 184 torque with only a Magnaflow exhaust on it.  We made one other dyno pull on it in stock form to verify our results were consistent.  We then put the Subaru on our lift and proceeded to remove the factory downpipe.  After a few cuts and scrapes from the factory heat shield we had the stock downpipe off and the brand new Tanabe downpipe installed.  After we installed the Tanabe we strapped the WRX back on the dyno and proceeded to do another pull, watching air/fuel closely, to see what gains were achieved from the new downpipe.  Below is the Dyno graph comparing the stock pull and the downpipe pull.

This car was now making 204 horsepower and 199 torque after the downpipe was installed.  Since our installation was done it was time to get to tuning.  The gains we were able to get out of this car were nothing short of awesome.  On all the Subaru’s we tune here at Smokey’s Dyno we tend to see extremely good gains on cars with a few bolt-ons and a tune.  But the gains we achieved on this specific vehicle were a bit unexpected due to it only having a downpipe and exhaust.  Below is the graph comparing stock, downpipe, and downpipe-tune.

This  Subaru WRX Tune ended up making 242 horsepower and 260 ft. lbs of torque for a total gain of 56 horsepower and 76 torque.  These cars typically respond very well to tuning and can get rid of a good deal of the lapse in power at lower rpm. Below is the final stock vs. tune power difference.
